Etymology

[edit]

Unknown.

Perhaps from Sanskrit *कर्व (*karva) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-) + -𑀟- (-ḍa-), a variant of Sanskrit खर्व (kharva, mutilated; low) that can be reconstructed from cognates such as Punjabi ਕੱਬ (kabba, crookedness, perverseness) and ਕੱਬਾ (kabbā, rude), Khetrani کَبّا (kabbā, left hand). Compare the semantically unusual but phonetically similar Prakrit 𑀓𑀯𑁆𑀯𑀸𑀟 (kavvāḍa, right hand).

Also compare to Hindi कूड़ा (kūṛā, trash, rubbish), Marathi केर (ker, trash).
