From Proto-Indo-Aryan *káHsatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *káHsatay, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷeh₂s- (to cough). Cognate with Latvian kāss, Russian ка́шель (kášelʹ), Irish casacht, Old English hwōsan.
