Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Apabhramsa गंधीय (gaṃdhīya), from Prakrit गंधिअ (gaṃdhia), from Sanskrit गान्धिक (gāndhika, “parfumier”).[1] First attested in c. 1654[2] as Middle Hindi گاندھی (gandhy /gāndhī/).
Sense 1.1 is derived from Gujarati ગાંધી (gāndhī).
