Inherited from Proto-New Indo-Aryan *घुंबपट्ट (ghuṃbapaṭṭa), from *𑀖𑀼𑀁𑀩 (*ghuṃba) + Prakrit 𑀧𑀝𑁆𑀝 (paṭṭa, “silk”). Cognate with Nepali घुमटो (ghumaṭo), Gujarati ઘૂમટો (ghūmṭo), Bengali ঘোমটা (ghōmṭa) and Odia ଘୁମ୍ବଟା (ghumbaṭā).
