Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *ǵénh₁trih₂ (“mother”). Cognate with Latin genitrīx, genetrīx, Ancient Greek γενέτειρα (genéteira). By surface analysis, from the root जन् (jan, “to beget”) +‎ -इत्री (-itrī).
