From Proto-Indo-Aryan *nábʰas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *nábʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *nébʰos. Cognate with Avestan 𐬥𐬀𐬠𐬀𐬵 (nabah), Latin nebula, Ancient Greek νέφος (néphos), Hittite 𒉈𒂊𒁉𒅖 (nēpis).
