Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *parut, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *parut, from Proto-Indo-European *péruti (last year, literally on the other side of the year), from *per (across) + *ut(i), locative singular form of *wet- (year). Cognate with Ancient Greek πέρυσι (pérusi, last year), Old Armenian հերու (heru, last year), Lithuanian pernai (last year) and Old Norse fjǫrð (last year).
