Etymology
[edit]Related to पलाव (palā́va, “chaff, husks”); compare also the "masculine" form पलाल (palāla, “straw”). Both meanings are visible in Latin palea (“chaff, husks; straw”).
A Dravidian borrowing (compare Tamil புல் (pul, “grass”)), as Burrow suggests, is implausible.
