Etymology

[edit]

Related to पलाव (palā́va, chaff, husks); compare also the "masculine" form पलाल (palāla, straw). Both meanings are visible in Latin palea (chaff, husks; straw).

A Dravidian borrowing (compare Tamil புல் (pul, grass)), as Burrow suggests, is implausible.
