From Proto-Indo-Aryan *prináHti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *prináHti, from Proto-Indo-European *pri-néH-ti (nasal infix athematic present), from *preyH- (to like; love). Cognate with Younger Avestan 𐬁𐬟𐬭𐬍𐬥𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (āfrīnaiti), Old English frēoġan (to love), English free and friend.
