Inherited from Old Hindi बिन (bina) / बिना (binā), from Prakrit विणा (viṇā), from Sanskrit विना (vinā́), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wí (“apart, asunder”). Cognate with Punjabi ਬਿਨ (bin) / بِن (bin), Mewari वना (vanā) Kachchi વિણ- (viṇa-), Marathi बिन- (bin-).
