From Proto-Indo-Iranian *mayHníš,[1] from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂y- (to hurt, deceive), which could be reduced from *meh₂- (to beckon) +‎ *-yeti.[2][3] See also Latin maereo (I am mournful), Proto-Slavic *mamiti (to deceive).
