From Proto-Indo-Iranian *yáwktram (“thong”), from Proto-Indo-European *yéwg-tro-m, from *yewg- (“to yoke”) + *-trom (suffix denoting a tool or an instrument for an action). Cognate with Avestan 𐬫𐬀𐬊𐬑𐬆𐬜𐬭𐬀 (yaoxəδra, “yoke-strap, thong”).
