Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀲𑀺𑀟𑁆𑀠𑀺 (siḍḍhi), from Sanskrit *श्रीढि (śrīḍhi), from the ancestor of the Sanskrit root श्रिष् (śriṣ) / श्लिष् (śliṣ, to attach, clasp) + धि (dhi, put, place). Cognate to Marathi शिडी (śiḍī), Bengali সিঁড়ী (śĩṛi).
