Borrowed from Sanskrit स्निग्ध (snigdha), from Proto-Indo-European *snigdʰás (“snowed”, past passive participle of *sneygʷʰ- (“to snow”)). See the root स्निह् (snih) for possible explanation on the semantic shift.
