Etymology

Either onomatopoeic or inherited from Prakrit *𑀳𑀧𑁆𑀧𑁆 (*happ, sudden movement), in which case related with हपकना (hapaknā, to gobble), हापर (hāpar, a great eater) and हपराना (haprānā, to much). Compare Nepali हप्-हप् खानु (hap-hap khānu, to gobble), Marathi हपका (hapkā, a smart dash of water) and हपटणें (hapaṭṇẽ, to dash against).
