Etymology

Either onomatopoeic or inherited from Prakrit *𑀳𑀧𑁆𑀧𑁆 (*happ, “sudden movement”), in which case related with हपकना (hapaknā, “to gobble”), हापर (hāpar, “a great eater”) and हपराना (haprānā, “to much”). Compare Nepali हप्-हप् खानु (hap-hap khānu, “to gobble”), Marathi हपका (hapkā, “a smart dash of water”) and हपटणें (hapaṭṇẽ, “to dash against”).
