[edit]Borrowed from Classical Persian هَمْسایَه (hamsāya).[1] By surface analysis, हम- (ham-, “same”) + साया (sāyā, “shade”). First attested in c. 1611 as Middle Hindi ہمسایہ (hmsayh /hamsāya/). Compare Punjabi ਹਮਸਾਇਆ (hamsāiā) / ہَمْسایَہ (hamsāyah).
