From Sanskrit ঘাস (ghāsa), from the root verb ঘস্ (ghas, to eat, devour).

      তৰঙ্গ বৰঙ্গ কৰি চতুৰ্দ্দিশে যায় ।
      সীতাদেৱী দেখন্ত কোমল ঘাঁস খায় ॥
      toroṅgo boroṅgo kori coturddiśe jayo ,
      sītadewī dekhonto kömolo gha̐so khayo .
      (The deer) goes to all directions,
      Sita sees it eats soft grass.
