Etymology[edit]

Learned borrowing from Sanskrit इलीश (ilīśa), इलीष (ilīṣa), a compound of इल् (il, to go, move) +‎ ईश (īśa, lord, master, chief), literally meaning "the chief of those which move (in water)", referring to the perceived taste of the fish.
