Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑀝𑁆𑀞𑀸𑀦 (*paṭṭhāna), from earlier *𑀧𑀱𑁆𑀝𑀸𑀦 (*paṣṭāna), borrowed from Old Iranian. Cognate with Bengali পাঠান (paṭhan), Hindustani پَٹھان (paṭhān) / पठान (paṭhān), Marathi पठाण (paṭhāṇ), Odia ପଠାଣ (pôṭhaṇô), and Punjabi پَٹھاݨ / ਪਠਾਣ (paṭhāṇ).
