Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀲𑀸𑀟𑀻 (sāḍī), from Sanskrit शाटी (śāṭī), from शाट (śāṭa, strip of cloth). Doublet of શાલ (śāl). Cognate with Assamese শাৰী (xari), Bengali শাড়ি (śaṛi), Hindustani ساڑی (sāṛī) / साड़ी (sāṛī), Konkani साडी (sāḍī), Marathi साडी (sāḍī) and Sindhi ساڙهيِ / साढ़ी (sāṛhī).
