Inherited from Sanskrit पल्यङ्क (palyaṅka), from परि (pari, around, about) +‎ अङ्कस् (aṅkas, bend, curve). Cognate with Assamese পাল্কী (palki), Bengali পালকি (paloki) and Bhojpuri पाल्की (pālkī).
