Inherited from Proto-Malayic [Term?], from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qanunaŋ, from Proto-Austronesian *qaNuNaŋ (Cordia dichotoma). Compare Kedah Malay nonang (Cordia sp.).

The meaning is possibly a phono-semantic matching of English annona (custard apple).
