Etymology

Cognate to Burmese စပ် (cap, hot, spicy) and Tangut 𘟌 (*tsar¹, pepper); their common ancestor would be Proto-Sino-Tibetan *rtsap (Sichuan pepper). The Kurtöp word is the only surviving reflex of this term in any of the Bodish languages.

Also related to Chali ཆཽ (chau).
