Etymology

[edit]

MED treats the term as an atomic unit, and STEDT gives no etymology (kacā: "play (a game)"). Luce suggests a connection to Old Chinese (OC *qʰral, *qʰrals, *qʰaː, “to play, tease”),[1] which seems highly speculative and not particularly likely based on phonetics. Alternatively, the first syllable appears to be က (ka., to dance), while the second syllable may be စား (ca:) in the sense of "to match", or perhaps in the sense of "to exceed; emphatic particle".

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • Phonetic respelling: ဂ'ဇား
  • IPA(key): /ɡəzá/
  • Romanization: MLCTS: ka.ca: • ALA-LC: kacāʺ • BGN/PCGN: găza: • Okell: kăsà
