From Old Burmese ဟေတ်, from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *b-r-gjat ~ b-g-rjat (eight). Cognate with Tibetan བརྒྱད (brgyad), Jingpho matsat, Nuosu (hxit), S'gaw Karen ဃိး (ghó).
