From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ljap (“butterfly”), whence also Tibetan ཕྱེ་མ་ལེབ (phye ma leb) and Chinese 蝶 (OC *l'eːb).
For the association with spirit, compare Thai ผีเสื้อ (pǐi-sʉ̂ʉa, “butterfly”, literally “tutelary soul”).
