Etymology

From an Iranian name, reflected also in Old Armenian Վախտանկ (Vaxtank), Վախթանկ (Vaxtʻank), Վախտանգ (Vaxtang), Վաղթանկ (Vałtʻank).

The origin of the Iranian name is uncertain. Gamkrelidze / Ivanov suggest an inner-Iranian analysis as *warx-tang (literally “wolf-bodied”); for the constituents see Old Persian 𐎺𐎼𐎣 (varka-, “wolf”) and Persian تن (tan, “body”). Compare also Ossetian Уӕрхӕг (Wærxæg, “the name of the mythical founder of Narts”), from the Iranian word for “wolf”.
