  1. Expresses wishes and desires, and may be translated as how good it would be if…! or how I wish that…!, if only
  2. Adds to questions a nuance of astonishment, disbelief or wonder. It may sometimes be translated using such phrases as how good it would be to know…! or if I only knew…! or how I wish to know…! or I wonder.
