Proto-Norse[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From *ᛊᚨᛚᛁᛉ (*saliʀ) + *ᚷᚨᛊᛏᛁᛉ (*gastiʀ, “guest”). The first element, *ᛊᚨᛚᛁᛉ (*saliʀ), might mean either "happy, fortunate" (from Proto-Germanic *sēliz, Old Norse descendant sæll), or "hall, room" (from Proto-Germanic *saliz, Old Norse descendant salr).
