Khmer

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Angkorian Old Khmer drvaṅ, from Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer droṅ. The etymon comprised of prefixal element /d-/ and an unattested root *roṅ (/roːŋ/) (Jenner, 2009). Jenner further compares this to ទ្រុង (trung, cage).

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Probably unrelated to Middle Chinese (MC trjuwng|trjuwngH) as the vowels were not exactly matching during the pre-Angkorian period. Plus, Jenner thinks this is a prefixed form.”
