From Proto-Tai *mɯəᴬ. Cognate with Thai เมือ (mʉʉa) or เมื้อ (mʉ́ʉa), Isan เมือ, Lao ເມືອ (mư̄a), Northern Thai ᨾᩮᩬᩥᩋ (mɯa⁴), Khün ᨾᩮᩬᩨ (mɤɤ⁴), Lü ᦵᦙᦲ (moe), Tai Dam ꪹꪣ (ꞌmứa), Shan မိူဝ်း (móe), Tày mừa.
