  1. Ardhavisargha is used to mark either jihvāmūlīya (which is a velar fricative [x] occurring only before unvoiced velar stops KA or KHA) or upadhmānīya (which is a bilabial fricative [ɸ] occurring only before unvoiced labial stops PA or PHA).

  • Sometimes used in contrast with with each representing one of the two possible sounds.
  • When in contrast, ᳳ for jihvāmūlīya and ᳲ for upadhmānīya
