  1. An unofficial extension to the International Phonetic Alphabet for the transcription of a near-close central rounded vowel, for which the standard transcription would be [ʊ̈] or [ʉ̞].
  2. A symbol used in some English-language dictionaries to denote a phoneme of standard Southern British English that may be realised variously as [ʊ] or [ə] without error.
