Possibly from ẹlí- +‎ gbó (to be old, ancient, ripe), compare with Olukumi árígbó, Yoruba arúgbó, Èkìtì Yoruba arígbó, Igala ánágbó. Proposed to be derived from a proto Edekiri form, though gbó (to be old), can be traced back to Proto-Yoruboid
