Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Schulze explained it as *αὐσ-άνθα (*aus-ántha) to the root of οὖς (oûs, ear), but since the suffix is unclear this analysis cannot be substantiated. Another theory derives this word from Proto-Albanian *a)uaϑā, compare modern Albanian vath (earring).[1]
