[edit]From ἀγκῠ́λος (ankúlos, “crooked, bent”) + -ις (-is, feminine suffix), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enkulos (“joint?”), from *h₂énkos (“curve”) + *-ulos (diminutive suffix).
