Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The suffix "-ίκη" is found also in ἑλίκη (helíkē) and μυρίκη (muríkē, tamarisk). A connection with Proto-West Germanic *natilā (nettle) has been proposed. Alternatively it might be a substrate word, maybe from Pre-Greek.
