From earlier *ἄϝεθλον (*áwethlon), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂weh₁- (to blow (of wind)) + *-dʰlom (forms nouns denoting tool or instrument), as if "gasp, pant, wheeze", if not from a similar root meaning "to strive".
