Etymology

Seems to be from ἐν (en, in, at) + Proto-Indo-European *gew- (hand; to curve) (whence γυῖον (guîon, hand), ἐγγῠ́η (engúē, pledge, security)), thus meaning "at hand (i.e. nearby)".[1]
