From earlier Ἰᾱ́ϝων (Iā́wōn), likely of Lua error in Module:parameters at line 360: Parameter 2 should be a valid language, etymology language or family code; the value "pregrc" is not valid. See WT:LOL, WT:LOL/E and WT:LOF. origin, or possibly sharing a Proto-Indo-European origin with Sanskrit योनी (yonī, womb, vagina), a reference to the Ionians' goddess-worshipping.

Compare Mycenaean Greek [script needed] (i-ja-wo-ne, Ionians), Egyptian ywnj ꜥꜣ (Great Ionia), both attested in the first half of 14th century BC.
