From Proto-Indo-European *h₂oren, *h₃eren. Cognates include Old Armenian որոր (oror), Hittite 𒄩𒀀𒊏𒀸 (ḫāras), Proto-Slavic *orьlъ, and Old English earn (English erne). See also ὄρνις (órnis).
