Etymology

Evident morphological cognates lack outside Greek. The traditional comparison with Sanskrit वृश्चति (vṛścati, to hew, cleave) is not accepted by Beekes. A connection with Proto-Indo-Iranian *wr̥ćšás (tree) is highly uncertain. The word could well be Lua error in Module:parameters at line 95: Parameter 2 should be a valid language, etymology language or family code; the value "pregrc" is not valid.
