Three possibilities are:

• name - see Phoenician 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤃 (hrʿd, “snake”), a reference to the serpents that had supposedly inhabited the land in ancient times.
• From ῥοία (rhoía, “pomegranate”).
• From ῥόδον (rhódon, “rose”).
