Possibly from Proto-Berber *aləy, from earlier *ăHləy, from Proto-Afroasiatic *ʕal- (to rise). Compare Proto-Semitic *ʕaly- (to ascend), Egyptian jꜥr (to ascend, arise), Tarifit aři (to climb, ascend).
