Noun
Usage notes
The term におい (nioi) is used for both fragrant and offensive odours, while かおり (kaori) is mainly for fragrances and くさみ (kusami) only for foul odors. For the meaning of bad odor, におい (nioi) is often written in kanji as "臭い", which can also be read as くさい (kusai), though "匂い" is easier kanji.
