A turned Latin upsilon ʊ, which in this era was often typeset as a turned small-capital omega.

Letter

  2. (phonetics) A higher vowel, IPA [ʊ]).

Usage notes

Proposed for [o̞] in Bloch & Trager (1942). Used in linguistic field notes in the 1950s and '60s.

Use for [ʊ] in e.g. Atlas Linguarum Europae (ALE).
