Etymology

A Semitic origin has been proposed for this word, connecting it with Classical Syriac ܫܠܦܐ (šelpā, “a knife-like iron tool for grasping or pulling out something”) and Σαλαμβώ (Salambṓ, “Babilonian goddess of love”). However, the alternation β/μβ would receive a good explanation under the assumption of Pre-Greek origin.
