Usage notes

[edit]

This term was coined by Ukrainians in reference to a derisive Russian term for Ukraine, страна́ 404 (straná 404, country 404, Ukraine as a non-existent country).

After the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian online users used it back towards Russia, referencing international sanctions against and criminal investigations of Russia, the international arrest warrant for its president, and its worsened reputation.
