Inherited from Prakrit *𑀓𑀸𑀲𑀫𑀤𑁆𑀤𑀻𑀆 (*kāsamaddīā), from 𑀓𑀸𑀲𑀫𑀤𑁆𑀤 (kāsamadda, Cassia spp.), from Sanskrit कासमर्द (kāsamarda), from कास् (kās) +‎ मर्द (marda), literally cough-crushing.
