Borrowed from Classical Persian نوکر (nawkar, servant), from Turkic with semantic shift, from Mongolic, ultimately from Proto-Mongolic *nökör (friend). Compare Hindustani نَوکَر (naukar) / नौकर (naukar), Bengali নওকর (noōkor), Punjabi ਨੌਕਰ (naukar) / نوکَر (nokar), Marathi नोकर (nokar), Kannada ನೌಕರ (naukara).
